Abstract
CONFLUENCIA: Advanced Study Group on Health Technology and Information with a Focus on Vulnerable Populations brings together scientists, professionals, students, institutions, and community representatives concerned with providing vulnerable populations with access to quality information through information and communication technologies appropriate and necessary for each context.
The group’s work encompasses the study of the health information ecosystem, including the production, search, selection, dissemination, and use of health information with a population-centered focus, prioritizing people facing social, economic, or environmental disadvantages, such as individuals living in poverty, children, the elderly, Indigenous populations, immigrants, refugees, patients with chronic conditions and rare diseases, and those facing adverse situations due to cultural, social, economic, or geographic conditions.
Given the close relationship between informational content and its medium, the group also prioritizes the study of information and communication technologies that can optimize the full range of informational processes involved. Scientifically, CONFLUENCIA comprises members from diverse fields such as Information Science, Information Technology, Computing, Biomedical Informatics, Public Health, Education, and Communication. This multidisciplinary composition is essential for addressing complex problems.
Another key scientific feature of the group is its commitment to national and international dialogue, ensuring that the best experiences and initiatives related to health information and technology with a focus on vulnerable populations are shared, discussed, replicated, disseminated, and adapted. The group is composed of leading researchers from Brazil, Canada, Chile, India, Israel, Portugal, Sweden, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam, among others.
CONFLUENCIA is directly aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3, 4, 10, and 17, which focus on health and well-being, inclusive and equitable education, reducing inequalities, and strengthening partnerships. Partnerships among public, private, and civil society organizations are fundamental to ensuring sustainability and effectiveness of actions, promoting a collaborative model that amplifies social impact and improves quality of life for targeted populations. Finally, the group serves as a hub for talent and expertise to foster collaborative research at both national and international levels.
